A hospital report on a stroke patient
Portuguese to English translation
Highly technical and detailed medical document translated for the patient to access ongoing care and insurance coverage
A snapshot
- Translated a comprehensive 22-page medical report
- Decoded complex terminology and handwriting
- Opened the door for the patient's ongoing medical care in the UK and insurance claim
The problem: A British citizen suffered a stroke while on holiday in Portugal in July 2022. He was taken to hospital as an emergency, treated in the Intensive Care Unit over three weeks and later returned home. Three months later, he needed his medical records translated for his insurance claim and ongoing care in the UK. He looked for help from a local translation agency, who entrusted the job to me. The 22-page report included handwritten nursing notes and complex radiology reports.
My response: I began my career working for a medical assistance company, helping people in exactly these kinds of circumstances. Not only do I have an awareness of the medical and nursing management of patients recovering in critical care, but I am well-versed in the language of the medical imaging techniques used for assessment. Here, brain CT scans were used to monitor the patient's progress and the extremely high-level terminology was crucial to get right.
It was also essential to decode the handwriting to give the fullest and most accurate picture. I used different strategies to decipher the notes including cross-referencing throughout the report, backed up by my knowledge of the kinds of treatments that are used.
Result: The client received an accurate and complete English translation of the report that the patient could pass to UK doctors to continue his care or submit to support an insurance claim.
